Understanding Dementia
Good carers are important to improve the quality of life for those living with dementia and to ease the load and provide respite for family members.
Ivy Home care invests heavily in our dementia training programme and in selecting carers who are required to take an intensive residential course before working with our dementia clients as live in carers. This is the most in-depth course of its kind in the country so you can be confident we provide the best carers for your loved ones.
Our Dementia Care package
Our personalised care is tailored around the needs and characteristics of your loved one. Our focus is on:
Empowerment – One of the most important aspects of successful dementia care is to work with the person being cared for to ensure they can remain independent. We promote all our clients to carry on doing the things they can do for themselves, but we are there to help when they come across something they cannot do. Therefore, our care is person-centred, rather than task based.
Empathy– We understand that empathy and a caring attitude are key to the success of caring for someone with dementia. These qualities are emphasised and grown throughout our training programme so that our clients are treated as people first and foremost. Carers are asked to think “How would I like it if it were me?” and to think about their client properly, using their imagination and the skills we teach them, to really understand what the individual wants. Continuity – we select a small team of carers who work on rotation providing our clients with the comfort of a familiar face.
Personality – We never lose sight of the person behind the dementia. That is why a large part of our assessment process focuses on your loved one’s personality, history, hobbies, likes, dislikes, hopes and fears.
